The 12-round bout, plus undercard action, will be broadcast.
Ennis was crowned the interim IBF welterweight champion last summer before being elevated to 'full' champion last November. He had been due to take on unbeaten mandatory challenger Cody Crowley this weekend but Crowley was not cleared to return after having eye surgery last year.
Ennis held the interim IBF title to start 2023. “Boots” was named full-time champion after Terence Crawford got stripped of the belt, just a few months after beating Errol Spence Jr. to become undisputed at welterweight. The two-time Golden Gloves medalist returns home for the first time since 2018, headlining a Philadelphia-held fight for the first time.
Fight fans are eagerly anticipating the return of Jaron “Boots” Ennis, who defends his IBF welterweight title against hard-hitting David Avanesyan on Saturday, July 13, at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The 12-round bout, plus undercard action, will be broadcast by DAZN.
Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) will be making his debut with Matchroom Boxing. Having won the vacant title with a shutout points win over Karen Chukhadzhian and defended it with a TKO 10 victory over Roiman Villa, “Boots” will be looking to stomp his next challenger into the canvas.
But for now the 27-year-old welterweight will have to do it against the likes of David Avanesyan.
Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) will make his first title defense as IBF welterweight champion Saturday night against Avanesyan (30-4-1, 18 KOs).
Avanesyan, 35, is a hard-hitting Russian who’s vulnerable to a big punch, too. He beat a faded Shane Mosley in 2016 but also got knocked out last year by Crawford.
In 2023, Ennis was the mandatory challenger for the IBF welterweight belt against Crawford. But Crawford was working on a rematch with Spence, which led the IBF to strip him of the belt and award it to Ennis. Crawford now is fighting at 154 pounds.
“It’s a blessing to be able to fight here and I’m ready to put on a show and look good doing it. Beat him up, break him down, get the stoppage, and have my fun,” Ennis, a Philly native, said ominously.
