anticipating the return of Jaron “Boots” Ennis, who defends his IBF welterweight title against hard-hitting David Avanesyan on Saturday, July 13, at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The 12-round bout, plus undercard action, will be broadcast.
Ennis was crowned the interim IBF welterweight champion last summer before being elevated to 'full' champion last November. He had been due to take on unbeaten mandatory challenger Cody Crowley this weekend but Crowley was not cleared to return after having eye surgery last year.
Ennis held the interim IBF title to start 2023. “Boots” was named full-time champion after Terence Crawford got stripped of the belt, just a few months after beating Errol Spence Jr. to become undisputed at welterweight. The two-time Golden Gloves medalist returns home for the first time since 2018, headlining a Philadelphia-held fight for the first time.
Fight fans are eagerly anticipating the return of Jaron “Boots” Ennis, who defends his IBF welterweight title against hard-hitting David Avanesyan on Saturday, July 13, at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The 12-round bout, plus undercard action, will be broadcast by DAZN.
Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) will be making his debut with Matchroom Boxing. Having won the vacant title with a shutout points win over Karen Chukhadzhian and defended it with a TKO 10 victory over Roiman Villa, “Boots” will be looking to stomp his next challenger into the canvas.
But for now the 27-year-old welterweight will have to do it against the likes of David Avanesyan.
Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) will make his first title defense as IBF welterweight champion Saturday night against Avanesyan (30-4-1, 18 KOs).
Avanesyan, 35, is a hard-hitting Russian who’s vulnerable to a big punch, too. He beat a faded Shane Mosley in 2016 but also got knocked out last year by Crawford.
In 2023, Ennis was the mandatory challenger for the IBF welterweight belt against Crawford. But Crawford was working on a rematch with Spence, which led the IBF to strip him of the belt and award it to Ennis. Crawford now is fighting at 154 pounds.
“It’s a blessing to be able to fight here and I’m ready to put on a show and look good doing it. Beat him up, break him down, get the stoppage, and have my fun,” Ennis, a Philly native, said ominously.

“I’m going to show the world and the 147lb division that I am the best.”
Avanesyan (30-4-1, 18 KOs) has had a solid career, but he goes in against a fighter who has been tipped for pound-for-pound supremacy. In a previous outing at this level, the Russian-born Armenian was battered to defeat by Terence Crawford.
“I believe why I am here; God has given me the chance,” said the challenger. “I know he’s a good fighter, but I’m happy that he is, I only want to fight good fighters, that’s why I am here.
“I’ve fought Crawford, but that’s history. People that know boxing, know me. I’ve had many big fights, this is another good fight and a great chance for me, and I will give everything.”
Will Ennis put on a spectacular show before his home fans and put pressure on Crawford to face him down the line?
The Sporting News will provide undercard results and a full report on this welterweight championship fight.
Avanesyan replaced Cody Crowley, who underwent eye surgery. He has held interim WBA, NABF, and European welterweight gold and has fallen short twice at holding world title gold. The Russian-born fighter rebounded in December following a loss against Crawford for the WBO welterweight title.
Ennis, who returns home to fight in Philadelphia having joined up with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom outfit, will instead fight Avanesyan who has fought just four rounds since he was knocked out by Terence Crawford 18 months ago. The Russian, who is based in the UK, has won 30 of his 35 fights but faces an uphill task tonight. Here is everything you need to know about the fights....
Nicolson won the interim WBC featherweight title in 2023 and gained full-time championship status by beating Sarah Mahfoud after Amanda Serrano relinquished the belt. The Aussie and 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medalist hopes to face “The Real Deal” to determine the next undisputed champion at 126.

Ennis vs Avanesyan: Live streaming results, round by round, how to watch, start time
Jaron “Boots” Ennis makes his Matchroom debut tonight, headlining at home in Philadelphia against David Avanesyan with Ennis’ IBF welterweight title on the line.
The undefeated Ennis was originally meant to face Cody Crowley, who was forced to withdraw after failing an eye exam. The veteran Avanesyan gets his third crack at a world title as a result. Also on the card, Skye Nicolson will defend her WBC featherweight title against Dyana Vargas, plus two more fights!
Saturday night will see a long-awaited Philadelphia homecoming for Jaron "Boots" Ennis.
Ennis returns to the ring for the first time in over a year, and to his hometown for the first time since 2018, as he defends the IBF welterweight title against David Avanesyan in his first fight with Matchroom Boxing.
Ennis was elevated from interim champion last November and with the division's top two fighters, Terence Crawford and Errol Spence, moving up in weight, Ennis now sits relatively unopposed at the top of one of boxing's most storied divisions.
His opponent Avanesyan has been in the ring with some of the world's best fighters, including Crawford, and he'll have another steep hill to climb in the ring against Ennis on Saturday.
“It’s not going to go past four rounds. It might hit five, you never know," Bozy Ennis, Jaron's father and trainer, said. "It all depends on how 'Boots' feels, because we have fun when we box, that’s what we do."
Stay tuned below for live updates throughout the Ennis vs. Avanesyan fight card.
Jaron Ennis vs David Avanesyan fight card
The Jaron Ennis vs. David Avanesyan undercard features Skye Nicolson in her first featherweight title defense along with a handful of rising young prospects including D.C.'s Jalil Hackett.
Main event: Jaron Ennis (31-0) vs. David Avanesyan (30-4-1); IBF welterweight title
Jalil Hackett (8-0) vs. Peter Dobson (16-1)
Skye Nicolson (10-0) vs. Dyana Vargas (19-1); WBC featherweight title
Khalil Coe (8-0-1) vs. Manuel Gallegos (20-2-1)
This will be Ennis' first fight with Matchroom Boxing and being a homecoming fight, he's well positioned to dominate. Avanesyan has experience taking on some of the best fighters in the world, but he's always come up short against elite-level competition, a trend which should continue on Saturday.
Ennis is one of the most skilled fighters in the sport and despite a year out of the ring, we don't see ring rust being a factor in this one. Ennis should pick Avanesyan apart with his lightning quick hands and fear-inducing power, proving the oddsmakers right with a stoppage in the first half of the fight.
Avanesyan will struggle to get to Ennis, who holds a six-inch reach advantage, and all the while Ennis will be landing at will, until either Avanesyan goes down for the count or the referee is forced to step in and stop the bout.
The boxing match between Jaron Ennis and David Avanesyan will take place tonight at 10:00 PM EST at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This event will feature a 12-round fight for the IBF World Welterweight Title.
Please note that the scheduled time for the ring walks might change depending on how earlier fights on the card progress. Delays or early finishes in these bouts could affect the exact start time of the main event.
For viewers outside of Eastern Standard Time, check local listings to find out when to watch the event in your time zone. Streaming options are available, providing access to live coverage of tonight’s fight.
